[about_artisan]The world-famous Delftware has a rich and long history that goes back to the early 1600s. The V.O.C. (Dutch East India Company) ships not only brought back spices from the Far East but also large quantities of Chinese porcelain. Dutch potteries seized the opportunity and developed their own version of this blue and white porcelain. This was the start of the Dutch Delftware industry which is now known internationally as a typically Dutch product. From the approximately 32 potteries that were founded in the 17th Century, Royal Delft is the only remaining Delftware factory left in Delft.
The Original Blue
The Original Blue is the name for Delftware that is hand-painted. These decorations have been used since the 17th century: Delft Blue and Poly-chrome. Delft Blue is by far the most famous.
Delft Blue
Delft Blue is the name for earthenware with blue decoration on a white background. The designs are inspired by Chinese porcelain from the Ming and Kang Hsi dynasties. Typical Dutch land and seascapes start to appear from the beginning of the 17th century.
Poly-chrome is a multi-colored decoration technique using the colors yellow, green, blue and red. This decoration technique was originally used in Mediterranean countries. [/about_artisan]
